404 (Not Found): The crawler looks for 24 hours again, before the page is marked as failed and thus thrown out of the primary index.
410 (Gone): The crawler marks the page as it was defective because the webmaster obviously knows what he’s doing. (Because 410 is only rarely and then intentionally used)
The crawler will look in both cases every now and then, if the page is accessible again. Therefore, it is only a very slight difference, for normal Webmaster insignificant and imperceptible.
The difference is only important if you want to optimize a website badass who has a lot changing content. With 410 discarded content will be removed quickly from the index, ie exactly 24 hours earlier. They make room for new content more quickly. This really is hardly important, unless a site is running on the edge of their crawl and index budgets.
