Google Announces Boost Of Mobile-Friendly Algorithm In May 2016


New Mobile Search Results Update In May

Google has posted on the Webmaster Central Blog that mobile sites are ranked even higher in May than previously.

Klemen Kloboves, a Google Software Engineer, wrote:

Getting good, relevant answers when you search shouldn’t depend on what device you’re using. You should get the best answer possible, whether you’re on a phone, desktop or tablet. Last year, we started using mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal on mobile searches. Today we’re announcing that beginning in May, we’ll start rolling out an update to mobile search results that increases the effect of the ranking signal to help our users find even more pages that are relevant and mobile-friendly.

If you’ve already made your site mobile-friendly, you will not be impacted by this update. If you need support with your mobile-friendly site, we recommend checking out theMobile-Friendly Test and the Webmaster Mobile Guide, both of which provide guidance on how to improve your mobile site. And remember, the intent of the search query is still a very strong signal — so even if a page with high quality content is not mobile-friendly, it could still rank well if it has great, relevant content.

Google Updates Local Search Algorithm (Pigeon)

Google launched last week a new algorithm to address more specific and relevant local searches. Little information has yet filtered through this new system which is still running in the United States …

The new algorithm has not been officially announced by Google and was born without a name, being named “Pigeon Update by the website Search Engine Land, a sort of unofficial spokesman for Google in relation to news and information about SEO and Marketing search in general.

The Pigeon Update aims to improve local searches, making them more relevant and accurate, and are much closer to the traditional organic search ranking factors, both being visible in Google Maps results as in the natural results.

Google’s Matt Cutts head of search spam has put out a new webmaster help video comes from Jacob Worsøe, Denmark on January 15, 2014 . Cutts discusses whether results in different positions are ranked by different Google algorithms.

Do Google use the same algorithm to rank all the results on page 1, or different algorithms for a wider variety in the results? (Pos. 1-3 – primary focus on freshness Pos. 4-6 – primary focus on backlinks Pos. 7-10 – primary focus on social signals)

I’m only going to concentrate on the web ranking because that’s what I know about, and in general, the rankings are not different for, you know, positions 1-3 and 4-6 and 7-10,” Mattt says. “It’s the same algorithm that returns lots of different web results – you know, 100 or even 1,000, and then with those, we just sort them in order of what we think the trade-off of relevancy vs. reputation. So we want something that’s very relevant, but also as reputable as we can find.

So it’s the same algorithm that generates all of those sorted lists of results, and then that shows up on the first page,” he adds. “So for the most part, for web ranking, it’s not the case that position number 9 is saved for, you know, things based on backlinks or anything like that. It’s the same algorithm that’s generating that list of search results.

Bottom Line

Matt’s answer is that it’s the same algorithm that returns all results in spite of the position. For web positions, the algorithm does its best to sort as well as order results based upon relevance and reputation.

Google’s Biggest Algorithm Update Since 2001

Google officially announced the hummingbird algorithm update that affected 90% of all search queries on September 26, 2013.

Hummingbird aims to describe the “precision and speed” for which Google will now provide search result based around conversational, semantic search.

Previous Algorithms Incorporated Into Hummingbird

Hummingbird is a completely new algorithm that incorporates all previous algorithm including PageRank, Panda and Penguin.

Current SEO strategies still apply. Social signals, relevant backlinks from reputable, established websites and quality content are just some of the 200 ranking factors that make up the Hummingbird algorithm.

Semantic Search & User Intent

Hummingbird is based on semantic search technology. Semantic search seeks to understand the searcher’s intent and the meaning of the query rather than parsing through keywords used in the search query. Google is using “form based” or “template” queries to answer questions at scale in real time. You can see this evidenced clearly in a recent patent, “Interactive Query Completion Templates, introduced in Aug 29, 2013.

Hummingbird aims to understand the entire query and provide accurate answer based on what searcher wants, rather than returning pages with SEO-friendly keywords used in the search query.

Improved Mobile Search

With so many searchers occurring on mobile devices, Hummingbird focuses heavily on mobile and voice search. It is also smarter at understanding conversational search and complex quires as questions.

If your site is well optimized for mobile searches, you may see an increase in mobile traffic.

Emphasis From “keywords” to “Answers”

Hummingbird represents a paradigm shift from keyword based search to conversational search. This means the algorithm is designed to return “content specific answer” rather than “keyword optimized web pages”

This means keyword research needs to more semantic and personalized for your target audience.

More Personalize Results

Hummingbird represents a paradigm shift from keyword based search to conversational search. Hummingbird aims to understand the user’s intent behind asking the question and context such as location, social connection on Google plus, previous searches and other information that Google already knows about the searcher.

Organic search on Google is now much more personalized, and the same search can yield different results to a particular searcher, based on their unique circumstances and intent.
